Accessibility

Built to be usable by everyone.

Overwrite exists to protect your privacy — so the site and the app are built to be usable by everyone, including screen-reader, keyboard-only, and reduced-motion users. This statement covers the standard we hold ourselves to, what we do to meet it, and how to reach us when something falls short.

Conformance status

This website targets and, to the best of our verification, conforms to WCAG 2.2 Level AA. Conformance is checked with automated axe-core audits in the site’s dark theme and in a right-to-left (Arabic) locale, plus manual keyboard review — most recently on 2026-07-25. The deliberate design exceptions are listed below.

What this website does

  • Full keyboard access — every control is reachable and operable by keyboard: the navigation, the language switcher, the FAQ, and the interactive wipe demo, whose slide-to-wipe control responds to the arrow keys.
  • Screen-reader aware — semantic landmarks and a single ordered heading outline on every page; the demo announces its state, and purely decorative visuals (the hero nebula, the sector-map canvases, and the ambient video loops) are hidden from assistive technology.
  • Fifteen languages, real RTL — every page is pre-rendered in 15 languages with correct lang and dir attributes; Arabic and Hebrew get full right-to-left layouts.
  • Motion you control — the site honors your system’s reduced-motion setting, and a pause toggle in the top navigation stops every ambient animation — the hero shader, the sector-map canvases, and all video loops — at any time. Your choice is remembered on your device.
  • Readable by design — AA-checked color contrast, self-hosted fonts (no third-party requests), interactive targets at least 24×24 pixels, and layouts that reflow cleanly down to 320 px wide without horizontal scrolling.

The Overwrite app

The macOS app is built to the same bar: it ships fully localized in all 15 languages, supports VoiceOver, and runs 100% offline — no accounts, sign-ins, or network steps in the way. As we verify further assistive-technology support, this section will grow with it.

Documented design exceptions

  • Technical values — SHA-256 hashes, sector counts, and certificate fields — stay left-to-right even in right-to-left locales. Their order carries meaning, and mirroring it would make the data wrong.
  • The site is presented in a single dark theme, contrast-verified at AA. Overwrite has no light mode; the macOS app follows your system appearance.
